Introducing the New Army Body Fat Calculator: Accurate & Efficient

Keeping track of your body fat percentage is crucial, especially if you’re aiming to meet the physical fitness standards set by the U.S. Army. Our new army body fat calculator makes this process easier than ever. This advanced tool estimates your body fat percentage based on the U.S. Army’s 2023 updated formula, commonly known as the “new army tape test.” While the calculator defaults to this new one-site measurement test, it also offers the option to use the older, more comprehensive multiple-site test.

Why Use the New Army Body Fat Calculator?

The calculator evaluates whether your body fat percentage meets the requirements for both applicants and active service members. It also compares your results with the Department of Defense’s body fat goals, giving you a clear indication of your fitness standing. While this tool is sometimes referred to as an Army BMI calculator, it focuses on body fat, which provides a more accurate representation of fitness than BMI alone.

The 2023 U.S. Army Body Fat Formula

In 2023, the U.S. Army introduced a new method for estimating body fat using just one measurement—abdominal circumference. Here’s how the formula works for both men and women:

Male Formula:

  • Body Fat % = -26.97 – (0.12 × Weight in lbs) + (1.99 × Abdominal Circumference in inches)

Female Formula:

  • Body Fat % = -9.15 – (0.015 × Weight in lbs) + (1.27 × Abdominal Circumference in inches)

Example Calculations

For Men:

  • Weight: 180 lbs
  • Abdominal Circumference: 36 inches
    • Body Fat % = -26.97 – (0.12 × 180) + (1.99 × 36)
    • Body Fat % = -26.97 – 21.6 + 71.64
    • Body Fat % = 23.07%

For Women:

  • Weight: 150 lbs
  • Abdominal Circumference: 32 inches
    • Body Fat % = -9.15 – (0.015 × 150) + (1.27 × 32)
    • Body Fat % = -9.15 – 2.25 + 40.64
    • Body Fat % = 29.24%

Maximum Allowable Percent Army Body Fat Standards

In addition to calculating your body fat percentage, it’s important to understand the U.S. Army’s maximum allowable body fat standards, which vary based on age and gender.

For Males:

  • Ages 17-20: 20%
  • Ages 21-27: 22%
  • Ages 28-39: 24%
  • Ages 40 and over: 26%

For Females:

  • Ages 17-20: 30%
  • Ages 21-27: 32%
  • Ages 28-39: 34%
  • Ages 40 and over: 36%
